Reader Trust
Your private answers should remain private.
Effective July 28, 2026
Public reading
You may read the public site without an account. Promise Practices, the Purpose Test, and the Purpose Card tools do not transmit private answers unless a later feature explicitly asks and receives consent. Local browser storage is identified inside each tool.
Performance and reliability
Optional performance reporting is disabled by default. When activated, Promise World may receive a Core Web Vital name, value, rating, navigation type, route pathname, and deployment label. Optional error-boundary reporting contains only a route, boundary source, and Next.js digest when available. These records do not include query strings, email addresses, order information, journal answers, Purpose Test answers, Purpose Card content, raw client stack traces, or a browser fingerprint.
Newsletter and reader journey
The newsletter collects an email address, an optional first name, selected topics, signup source, consent version, consent time, confirmation status, and later preference or unsubscribe actions. Submitting the form sends a confirmation request. The address does not become active until the confirmation link is used.
Independent topics
Book news, events, reading-group materials, What Comes After Purpose?, and press announcements are independent preferences. Selecting one does not grant permission for the others.
Email provider
When activated, Promise World uses Resend to deliver confirmation and reader email, maintain contact topic preferences, and process global unsubscribe status. Resend receives the information needed to provide that service.
Consent records
The confirmed contact record stores the consent version, confirmation time, signup source, and selected reader journey. Secure preference and unsubscribe links are signed and expire. They should not be forwarded.
Your choices
Every confirmed reader may request a secure preferences link, change individual topics, or unsubscribe globally. Unsubscribing does not affect access to any public page. You may return to the Reader Journey to request a secure link.
Cookies and local storage
The public reading site does not require advertising cookies. Accessibility, reading, and interactive-tool preferences may be stored locally in your browser. Optional service providers may use strictly necessary delivery or security technologies under their own policies when those services are activated.
Private reader notebook
The Reader Annotation Edition stores highlights, selected passages, notes, questions, bookmarks, tags, and reading trails only in this browser under the local key promise-world-reader-annotations-v1. Annotation content is not transmitted to Promise World, included in performance reports, or published as a comment or profile. The reader may export JSON, Markdown, or CSV, import a JSON backup, disable visual highlight restoration, or erase the entire local notebook from the private notebook.
Classroom and academic tools
The classroom edition does not create student accounts, collect assignments, receive grades, run plagiarism checks, record attendance, copy private annotations, store listening history, or build behavioral profiles. Assignment-builder and citation selections remain in the active browser page unless the user deliberately downloads, prints, or copies the resulting text.
Schools and instructors that move materials into a learning-management system, roster, gradebook, email platform, proctoring service, or institutional analytics system are responsible for the privacy, accessibility, retention, consent, and security rules of those systems.
Limited edition preservation records
The Limited Edition Digital Archive publishes public edition metadata, stable routes, provenance notes, and checksums. It does not collect collector profiles, ownership records, purchase history, token wallets, or private archive submissions. Downloaded preservation manifests contain public release metadata only.
Audiobook companion progress
The Audiobook Companion stores listening position, chapter completion state, transcript focus, and playback speed only in this browser under the local key promise-world-audiobook-progress-v1. Promise World does not receive listening history, and no account or public listening profile is created. A reader may clear local progress from the companion. Private notebook bookmarks may retain a local audio return position when the reader explicitly saves one.
Children
The site is a general-audience literary publication and is not directed to children under 13. Promise World does not knowingly solicit personal information from children.
Security and retention
Server secrets remain outside browser code. Email tokens are signed and time-limited. Promise World retains reader records only while needed for delivery, legal compliance, suppression, and proof of consent. A global unsubscribe may remain as a suppression record so the address is not silently added again.
Commerce and order support
Direct checkout is disabled until the commerce readiness gates are complete. Group-order and support forms prepare text in the browser and open an email application or copy the text. They do not transmit the contents to Promise World by themselves. When direct commerce is later activated, the payment provider will collect payment details directly; ordinary Promise World forms must not request full card data.
Fiction disclosure
Admit Purpose, Promise World, Reverend Beau Promise, and the institutions described on this site are fictional. The website operator and email delivery systems are real.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or receive a copy of personal information, and to appeal or complain to a regulator. Promise World does not sell personal information or use it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Identity verification may be required before fulfilling a request.
International processing
Service providers may process limited information in countries other than your own. Launch approval must confirm the applicable provider terms, transfer mechanisms, and operator obligations.
Changes
Material changes will be shown by a revised effective date. A policy draft does not prove legal approval; final operator details and jurisdiction-specific review remain launch requirements.
Contact
Privacy inquiries may be prepared through the contact page. Verified contact details must be configured before the site claims to receive them.
