Beau’s teaching
Every man wants something. The weak man hides the desire beneath softer words and calls the disguise virtue. The chosen man names what he wants before the room teaches him to apologize for it.
Vision is not the ability to describe what exists. Vision is the authority to name what the room will become, then ask other people to act as if the future has already arrived.
A desire should be examined for price, but price alone does not make the desire wrong. It reveals who has been invited to carry it.
The novel
Beau opens the novel by turning appetite into a test of courage. The tire shop soon proves both the beauty and the danger of that doctrine.
A weak man asks whether he deserves what he wants. A strong man asks how soon it can arrive.

Darlene helps convert Beau's desire into a functioning church. She also becomes the person expected to make every promise balance after Beau has already announced the future.
Her labor, complicity, and memory become part of the institution while her cautions are treated as proof that she cannot yet see what Beau sees.
